Afternoon temperatures in Chicago climb to 94 degrees by 4 PM, rising slightly to 95 degrees at 6 PM before cooling to 92 degrees by 8 PM. Winds from the south-southwest will stay brisk at around 23 miles per hour, providing a breezy afternoon.
Today in the Midwest, we’re seeing quite the range of high temperatures. Chicago and Peoria are both heating up to 96 degrees, while just a bit further south, St. Louis skyrockets to 98. Indianapolis will see a high of 93, making it one of the cooler spots alongside Fort Wayne at 93 as well. Kansas City checks in at 95, while Louisville is just slightly warmer with a high of 95 degrees. Farther east, Columbus enjoys a high of 91 degrees, providing a bit of relief from the heat wave affecting much of the region.
Tonight, Chicago drops to a mild 77 degrees, while Des Moines and Kansas City won’t be far behind with lows of 77 and 78, respectively. Indianapolis expects a low of 76, making it warm but comfortable for the Midwest. Over in Louisville, temperatures will also settle at 76 degrees, with Bowling Green slightly cooler at 75 degrees.
Tomorrow in the Midwest, temperatures are heating up significantly with highs reaching 98 degrees in Springfield. St. Louis isn’t far behind, expecting a high of 98 as well. Chicago will see a warm 97 degrees, while Fort Wayne and Indianapolis will both hit 96. These temperatures are above average for this time of year, with warm air surging into the region, influenced by a persistent high-pressure system. Kansas City rounds out the forecast with a high of 94 degrees.
A cold front is making its way across the Midwest tonight, sparking storm activity with the potential for severe storms from Chicago southbound to St. Louis. Expect heavy rainfall, especially through Indianapolis and Columbus, possibly exceeding an inch over the next 24 hours. As the front moves eastward into Cleveland, gusty winds and downpours will be prominent. Temperatures will drop by nearly 10 degrees following the passage.
