Meteorologist Amy Freeze guides you through the complex weather patterns affecting the Midwest this week. From Chicago’s partly cloudy skies and occasional sunshine to severe storm alerts in Michigan and Indiana, there’s a lot unfolding. Understand when to carry your umbrella and when to plan for a picnic as we cover various cities and their specific weather nuances. On the Regional Radar, a band of heavy rain extends across much of the Midwest. Chicago is experiencing steady showers with the rain reaching into Fort Wayne and Columbus. In Indiana, Indianapolis is also under a blanket of rain, with showers extending westward to St. Louis and farther northeast to Detroit. Notably, Peoria and Bowling Green are in the midst of moderate precipitation, while a pocket of severe weather is noted near St. Louis. Up north, Saginaw is getting light rain, although conditions in these areas may change with the progression of the front. Springfield has light rain coverage, while Cleveland is receiving moderate rainfall.
In Chicago this afternoon, temperatures are peaking at 68 degrees by 3 PM, then gradually cooling to 63 degrees by 7 PM. Expect mostly cloudy skies throughout, with a southerly breeze at 15 miles per hour dropping to 11 by later in the evening. The overcast conditions keep the atmosphere on the cooler side, with some breaks in the clouds allowing for a hint of sunshine around 5 PM.
Today in the Midwest, we’re seeing quite a variety in high temperatures. Kansas City and Springfield are leading the way with warm highs of 78 degrees. Indianapolis reaches a pleasant 72, while Chicago sits close behind with a high of 68. Fort Wayne also shows similar temperatures, topping out at 69 degrees. To the south, Louisville enjoys a mild high of 76, and Bowling Green is right there at 75 degrees.
Tonight in the Midwest, temperatures are dropping significantly as we settle into a chilly night. Chicago will see a low of 35 degrees, while Peoria cools to 37. In Springfield, expect a colder evening at 36 degrees. Kansas City is slightly warmer with a low of 38, but farther south in Indianapolis, temperatures will drop to 43 degrees. Louisville is forecasted at 51.
For tomorrow’s high temperatures across the Midwest, expect a mix of mild and seasonal readings. Peoria is also looking at a high of 67. St. Louis will enjoy temperatures of 71 degrees. Farther south in Indianapolis, expect a high of 72 degrees. Louisville will see similar warmth with a high of 72 degrees, while Bowling Green tops out at 75 degrees. To the east, Columbus reports a high of 71 degrees, and temperatures in Charleston are expected to peak at 75 degrees. Kansas City, however, is an outlier with a cooler high of only 49 degrees because it is behind the cold front.
“A cold front moving into the Midwest late tonight will bring showers and possible thunderstorms moving east across Cleveland. Indianapolis and Louisville should be on alert for a few downpours. Temperatures will be more mild behind the front, with cooler conditions settling in by Sunday. The risk of severe storms is mainly focused on Fort Wayne and Detroit, so stay informed on any weather warnings as scattered thunderstorms could lead to brief downpours and gusty winds. Looking farther north, some mixed precipitation could touch places like Saginaw.”
The UV index in Chicago is low and will not be significant today or tomorrow due to the storm system blocking harmful rays.
