This week, NYC and the Northeast brace for a series of weather changes, as detailed by meteorologist Amy Freeze. With thunderstorms brewing and temperatures taking a dip, it’s essential to be prepared. Our guide covers everything from the progression of storms across key cities like Philadelphia and Boston to daily temperature fluctuations. Plus, get a sneak peek at the cooler conditions expected and tips for handling sudden weather shifts.
Across the Northeast, today’s radar indicates a mix of conditions. A line of rain showers is stretching from Albany to Syracuse, moving eastward toward Boston, suggesting a wet morning for these areas. In Portland, light rain is already falling, anticipated to continue through the day. Farther west, Buffalo is experiencing scattered rain showers, with some more moderate pockets moving in. Behind these formations, skies are beginning to clear, leading to a potential break from precipitation by late afternoon. In the southern parts of the region, cities like New York and Philadelphia are basking in relatively clear skies. Scranton remains dry for the moment, with clouds on the horizon hinting at upcoming rain. Pittsburgh enjoys clearer conditions, but be prepared for changing weather as clouds edge closer.
This evening in New York City, temperatures will start around 60 degrees at 8 PM, with a dip to 58 degrees by midnight. A southwest wind will shift weaker, moving from 6 miles per hour to 5 miles per hour later tonight. Expect thunderstorms initially, transitioning to light rain as the evening progresses.
Low temperatures tonight in the Northeast will bring some crisp conditions. Buffalo is forecast to drop to 29 degrees, while Syracuse will experience a chilly 26. Scranton is expected to see a low of 28 degrees. Philadelphia will cool down to 35. Boston gets even colder, dropping to 30 degrees, and Portland aligns closely with that at 25 degrees.
Tomorrow in the Northeast, we’re looking at a mix of temperatures that will trend above average in some areas, while others remain chilly due to lingering clouds. Philadelphia also enjoys the same high of 55 degrees, making it a comfortable day for outdoor activities. Down in Washington, D.C., temperatures are set to reach 60 degrees. Traveling north, Pittsburgh will see a high of 52 degrees, while Scranton lags slightly behind with a high of 45 degrees. In Boston, temperatures will reach 50 degrees, and Portland, Maine, will see a cooler high of 47 degrees. Buffalo and Syracuse are on the chillier side, both stuck at 39 degrees.
An active weather day is expected across the Northeast region tomorrow. Anticipate a strong line of thunderstorms progressing from Philadelphia to New York by late morning, potentially bringing heavy rainfall and gusty winds. These storms will continue their march northeastward, impacting Boston and surrounding areas by early afternoon. Be cautious of localized flooding due to the heavy downpours over the next 24 hours. Temperatures will remain relatively cool beneath the persistent cloud cover and rain, ranging from the high 40s to low 50s. As the front progresses farther east, drier and cooler air will begin to settle in from the northwest by tomorrow evening. While severe storm risk is slight, it’s wise to stay alert for any weather updates or flood advisories.
The UV index in New York City today is low at 3. Tomorrow, Tuesday, the index rises to a moderate level of 6, with a burn time of around 23 minutes.
