Tune in to Amy Freeze’s detailed analysis and get prepared for both the beauties and challenges of spring weather in the Northeast.
The Northeast region is buzzing with activity on the radar today. A vibrant line of thunderstorms is stretching along the coast from Boston all the way down to the Big Apple, with New York City experiencing those stormy conditions right now. Look out for lightning and strong gusts. Moving farther inland, Syracuse and Albany are seeing pockets of rain, contributing to the widespread wet conditions. Buffalo is under scattered showers as moisture moves in from the west, while Scranton and Philadelphia find themselves in the path of oncoming rain showers, making the roads slick. Washington is enjoying a break in the weather with drier skies for the capital. Portland is brushing against the northern edge of this system, where it meets a mix of precipitation including some sleet and ice. Within the higher latitudes, keep an eye out for temperatures that could dip just enough to mix in some snow, especially in areas north of Albany.
For this evening in New York City, the forecast indicates cloudy skies initially, with temperatures steady at 66 degrees. Expect a light southwesterly wind at 7 mph. As we progress into the night, conditions remain cloudy until around 1 AM when showers are expected to commence, while winds shift from the west at 5 mph.
Temperatures will drop significantly as cold air sweeps across the region. In Buffalo, expect a low of 43 degrees, while Syracuse will cool down to 41. Scranton’s temperature will settle at 45 degrees. New York City is looking at a low of 48, and Boston will be a bit colder at 43 degrees. Further north, Portland will experience a brisk 36 degrees.
For tomorrow, the Northeast is looking at highs that reflect a mix of seasonal warmth and lingering cool pockets. Buffalo will see a high of 52 degrees, aligning with the cooler trend. Syracuse will also be on the chillier side, reaching just 52 degrees. Moving south, Scranton is expected to warm up slightly with a high of 59 degrees. Pittsburgh will be a touch warmer at 59 degrees as well. Philadelphia is projecting a more comfortable 66 degrees. Boston should expect a high of 63 degrees. Overall, temperatures across the region will generally be below average for early April.
A cold front is set to approach the Northeast, bringing a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms late Thursday night. Expect rain primarily from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia as it moves eastward. A surge of moisture could lead to heavy rainfall, particularly along coastal areas including Boston and New York City. This weather system may produce wind gusts that could disrupt travel. Temperatures will remain mild, though a cooling trend is anticipated as the front passes. Stay alert for updates, as some rainfall may lead to localized flooding.
The UV index in New York City for Thursday is low at 2, so there’s minimal risk of sun exposure due to a storm system blocking UV rays. But as Friday approaches, the UV index climbs to a moderate 4. You’ll have a burn time of 35 minutes in direct sunlight, so remember to apply sunscreen and take breaks in the shade when outside!
Thursday: Rain is expected with temperatures reaching a high of 69 degrees, dropping to 56 at night. Friday: Cloudy skies with a high of 63 degrees and a low of 48. Saturday: Showers will greet you early, with a chillier day high of 51 degrees and nighttime low of 45. Sunday: More showers, as the temperature climbs to 58 degrees, cooling to 41 overnight.
