Across the Southwest region on the radar, a weather system is creating diverse conditions today. In Northern California, areas such as Redding and extending south towards Sacramento are experiencing moderate rain. The higher elevations near Reno are seeing snow mixed with rain, contributing to tricky travel conditions along the Sierra Nevada. Farther south, in the central part of the state from San Francisco through Fresno, rain showers provide relief to these areas, although heavy precipitation is not expected. Heading down the coast, cities like Los Angeles and San Diego are enjoying mostly clear conditions, with only scattered clouds and mild weather. In Nevada, Ely is experiencing clear skies, granting a respite from earlier precipitation. Over in the more eastern parts such as Cedar City in Utah, cloudy skies dominate but no rain has developed yet. For those in Flagstaff some light snow has begun falling, causing temperature drops and a wintry feel to the day. The rest of Arizona, including Phoenix and Tucson, remains dry and clear, with cool temperatures aiding comfort across the deserts.
In Phoenix, the afternoon temperatures are set to soar, reaching 96 degrees by 4 PM and peaking at 99 degrees by 6 PM. Winds will be blowing from the south-southwest at 6 to 7 miles per hour, increasing to 12 miles per hour by 8 PM.
Let’s take a look at those high temperatures today. Phoenix is heating up with a scorching 100 degrees, making it the hottest spot in the region. Over in Las Vegas, it’s warm too, reaching 91 degrees. Heading north, Ely is seeing a milder high of 72 degrees, while Cedar City stays comfortable at 73. In California, Bakersfield warms up to 84 degrees and Los Angeles enjoys a pleasant 73. Along the coast, San Diego sits at a cool 70 degrees.
Expect a chilly 34 in Cedar City, Utah, and 35 in Flagstaff, Arizona. Las Vegas will see a low of 61, a considerable contrast to the cooler temperatures nearby. In California, the cities are milder, with San Diego at 51 and Los Angeles at 49. Bakersfield will be slightly warmer, around 56 degrees. Meanwhile, San Francisco will cool down to 49 degrees.
In Southern California, Los Angeles will see a high of 70 degrees, while nearby San Diego is slightly cooler at 68 degrees. Moving inland, Bakersfield and Fresno are both heating up to 83 degrees. Further east, Las Vegas is set to reach a sizzling 89 degrees, and Phoenix will be even warmer, with a high of 93 degrees, well above what is typical for this time of year. Up north in Ely, temperatures will be more mild, peaking at 62 degrees, and Cedar City will hit 67 degrees.
For tomorrow in the Southwest, expect a shift towards cloudy conditions. Areas in Northern California will experience rounds of significant valley rain that could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas. Southern California’s San Bernardino Valley is likely to see heavy showers, adding to slick driving conditions over mountain passes. By afternoon, moderate rain spreads eastward into Nevada and Arizona. With this weather system moving through, watch for a drop in temperatures as the rain progresses farther inland. Be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions.
Today in Phoenix, expect a very high UV index of 8, suggesting a burn time of approximately 17 minutes under direct sunlight. As we move into Sunday, the UV index decreases slightly to 6, with a burn time of 23 minutes
