This week, areas from Austin to Dallas are experiencing dramatic shifts, with severe thunderstorms rolling through and temperatures fluctuating into the upper 80s. Whether you’re in Oklahoma City enjoying clear skies or in Dallas under stormy clouds, I’ll guide you through what to anticipate and how to stay safe. The radar for the Southern Plains indicates a line of severe thunderstorms sweeping eastward, from Central Texas towards the Louisiana border. Dallas to San Antonio is experiencing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, with the showers stretching down to Corpus Christi. This storm system is progressing towards the eastern parts of Texas and is expected to impact Shreveport and Jackson as it moves further east. Areas like Oklahoma City are seeing a break from the rain, with relatively clearer skies. Across the region, make sure to keep an umbrella handy if you’re under these stormy clouds, as conditions can develop rapidly.
Afternoon temperatures in Austin are in the low 80s, with a mostly cloudy sky settling in. Winds are coming from the southeast at 8 miles per hour, bringing a gentle breeze throughout the afternoon. By 5 PM, the temperature is expected to decrease slightly to 80 degrees, with clouds breaking up for some partial sunshine. As the evening approaches, temperatures will continue to cool to 77 degrees while maintaining mostly cloudy conditions.
El Paso is leading the pack with a high of 88 degrees, while Midland reaches 84. In Texas, San Antonio is forecasted to see a high of 83, and Dallas is slightly cooler at 78. Farther east, Little Rock will hit 83 degrees, and Jackson is enjoying a warm 80 degrees. New Orleans isn’t far behind with a high of 81, providing a warm day along the Gulf Coast.
Oklahoma City will see a low of 60 degrees, while Dallas drops to 65. Midland is forecasting a low of 65, and El Paso will cool to around 58 degrees. In contrast, San Antonio remains mild with a low of 72.
High temperatures for the Southern Plains tomorrow are set to be well above average, with many areas experiencing a warm day. El Paso will reach 87 degrees, while Midland enjoys a high of 84 degrees. San Antonio is expected to be the hottest spot at 88 degrees, and Corpus Christi will also see a warm 84 degrees. Dallas will be slightly cooler at 81 degrees, and Oklahoma City is forecasted for a high of 75 degrees.
A cold front moves into the Southern Plains overnight, bringing widespread rain from Dallas to San Antonio. Oklahoma City may experience stronger storms with potential for severe weather, including damaging winds and heavy rainfall. The unstable air mass increases the likelihood of severe weather warnings across the southeast through Wednesday night.
The UV index in Austin will reach 7 on Wednesday, with a burn time of about 20 minutes, so sunscreen and protective clothing are recommended. On Thursday, the UV index will increase to 8, reducing the burn time to just 17 minutes.
