This week in the Southern Plains, we’re seeing a whole spectrum of weather phenomena. As snow blankets northern regions, central cities like Austin enjoy calmer, sunnier skies, albeit with brisk mornings. The area also braces for potential severe weather as a robust front moves eastward. Meteorologist Amy Freeze breaks down these developments day by day, offering insights and tips on how residents can stay safe and prepared.
Over the Southern Plains, our regional radar reveals dynamic weather as a low-pressure system sweeps through the area. In the Texas Panhandle and into parts of New Mexico, snow is actively falling, particularly around Albuquerque, with bands reaching El Paso and even as far south as Midland. This snowy weather is accompanied by gusty winds, creating quite a wintry scene. Meanwhile, eastward across Arkansas, intense storms are developing around Little Rock and moving towards western sections of Mississippi. There, heavy rain and potential for severe weather are expected, as this system pushes into regions near Jackson. Farther south, from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, conditions are relatively dry, with cloud cover keeping temperatures moderate across most of the area. For cities like Dallas and Oklahoma City, a mix of light rain showers is present, serving as a transition to the heavier precipitation areas further east.
Tomorrow morning in Austin, expect a chilly start with temperatures at 45 degrees at 8 AM, climbing slightly to 50 degrees by noon. The wind will be coming from the north-northwest around 13 to 14 miles per hour, adding a brisk feel to the air. The sky will transition from mostly cloudy at 8 AM to partly cloudy by 10 AM, then returning to mostly cloudy conditions towards noon.
High temperatures for the Southern Plains tomorrow are gearing up to be above average, influenced by a warm front moving through the region. In El Paso, expect a comfortable high of 59 degrees. Midland will see a notable rise, reaching 85 degrees—well above the seasonal norm. San Antonio is forecasted to warm up to 81 degrees, while Corpus Christi should expect a pleasant high of 77 degrees. Dallas will experience a cooler day with a high around 64 degrees, which is on the lower end of the seasonal spectrum. Kansas City is looking at a high of 55 degrees, while Little Rock is set for cooler conditions at 50 degrees. Overall, the Southern Plains will feel a blend of mild to warm temperatures as we transition into spring.
Prepare for fast-changing weather across the Southern Plains. Tomorrow, a strong front pushes farther east, sparking potential severe storms from Dallas to Little Rock, Arkansas. Heavy rain and thunderstorms could lead to localized flooding, particularly in eastern Oklahoma. Temperatures remain steady, with warm conditions ahead of the front and cooler air following its passage. Be on alert for additional weather warnings, primarily affecting areas from Tulsa to New Orleans as the front moves through.
