Hello there, weather enthusiasts! Meteorologist Amy Freeze here with a comprehensive look at the weather across the Southwest. From the gentle showers in Salt Lake City to the warm sun of Las Vegas, and even snow in the high mountains, each region has its own unique weather story. As we track a cold front moving in, expect significant changes, including potential localized flooding and changing skies. Keep up-to-date with daily forecasts if you’re in these areas! And of course, wherever you are, stay weather-aware and safe! A band of rain stretches along the northern California coast, reaching south towards Redding. Snow is falling in the high elevations near Ely and Cedar City, creating limited visibility in the mountains. Clear skies dominate the regions around Las Vegas and Phoenix. Scattered showers are impacting the area around Salt Lake City, bringing some refreshing moisture. San Diego and Los Angeles enjoy sunny conditions.
Salt Lake City will see temperatures around 50 degrees through the afternoon with a wind from the west-northwest at 10 miles per hour. Rain is expected to start early in the afternoon, transitioning to showers by 6 PM as temperatures dip slightly to 49 degrees. By evening, clouds will dominate with temperatures at 50 degrees and a gentle wind from the west-southwest at 8 miles per hour.
In the Southwest Las Vegas is expected to reach 80. In Southern California, Los Angeles enjoys a comfortable 71 degrees, contrasted by San Diego at a cooler 69. Moving north, Fresno and Bakersfield both hit 80 degrees, making for a warm day in the Central Valley. San Francisco is a cool outlier with a high of just 64, as coastal influences keep temperatures in check.
Tonight, Flagstaff dropping to a chilly 33 degrees. Ely will see even colder conditions at 37 degrees. Las Vegas will have a low of 63, while Los Angeles is expected to cool down to 56 degrees. San Diego remains relatively mild at 56 degrees as well. Phoenix will stay warmer at 65, but still feels a shift in the air.
Tomorrow, many areas above average for this time of year. In Phoenix, expect a high of 91 degrees, while Las Vegas will reach 87. Further west, Bakersfield and Fresno are both projected to see highs around 87 and 86 degrees, respectively. San Diego will remain milder at 69 degrees, with more coastal influence keeping temperatures down
A well-defined cold front is poised to impact the Southwest starting tomorrow, bringing cooler temperatures and increased wind gusts. The Sierra Nevada region could experience some high-elevation snow, while lower elevations are likely to see rain showers. The front pushes through Tuesday night, leading to clearing skies and a drop in temperatures by Wednesday morning. Keep an eye out for localized flooding in valleys due to the persistent rain. Coastal areas in Southern California will encounter scattered showers, but conditions will improve by mid-week.
The UV index in Salt Lake City on Wednesday will be moderate at 4, with a potential burn time of 35 minutes, so be prepared with sunscreen if you’ll be outside between the showers. On Thursday, the UV index rises to a high of 7, with a quicker burn time of 20 minutes under the sun.
