The radar image for the Southwest region paints a dynamic weather picture today. Starting in the Pacific Northwest, rainy conditions are sweeping into Northern California, with Redding experiencing persistent rain showers. As precipitation moves southward, it is bringing much-needed moisture to the valleys around Fresno and Bakersfield. These areas are also under cloud cover extending across the Central Valley.
Up in the Sierra Nevada, snow is actively falling, which could make travel tricky in the higher elevations, so if you’re headed to the mountains, be prepared for winter driving conditions.
In the Great Basin region, Cedar City and Salt Lake City are under light showers. Arizona sees more settled weather, with only a cold breeze brushing through Flagstaff and the surrounding highlands.
Las Vegas sits in a dry pocket today, enjoying clear conditions, and for those in Southern California—from San Francisco to San Diego—the radar shows mixed weather. While Los Angeles has sprinkles and cloud cover, San Francisco is drier but not completely clear, so a fun day outdoors might include intermittent showers, especially with brisk winds coming through.
For this evening in Los Angeles, temperatures are set to gradually decrease from 59 degrees at 8 PM to 55 degrees by midnight. Expect mostly cloudy skies turning partly cloudy as the night progresses. Wind speeds will shift from southwest at 8 miles per hour to a lighter west-southwest breeze at 4 miles per hour, contributing to a calm and pleasant evening atmosphere.
Tonight in the Southwest, we’re looking at some notably chilly temperatures. Ely will hit a frigid 22 degrees, while Cedar City will drop to 26. Las Vegas stays warmer at 50 degrees, but that’s still a dip from the last few nights. Flagstaff looks to be the coldest spot at just 20 degrees. In the lower elevations, San Diego will see a mild 51, while Phoenix cools off to 52 degrees.
Here’s the regional high temperature rundown for the Southwest this Tuesday:
Phoenix will see a warm high of 74 degrees, reflecting slightly above-average temperatures for this time of year.
Las Vegas reaches a high of 66 degrees, which is also a bit above the seasonal norm.
In California, Los Angeles will hit 66 degrees, while San Diego enjoys a mild 60 degrees.
Bakersfield warms up to 61 degrees, and Fresno is slightly cooler at 55 degrees.
San Francisco remains on the chilly side with highs around 56 degrees, due to coastal influences.
Up in Nevada, Ely sees a cooler day with a high of just 40 degrees.
In the Southwest tomorrow, expect a clear, sunny pattern to dominate across the desert areas. However, further north, we anticipate unsettled weather conditions. A cold front will push into Northern California late in the evening, bringing several rounds of valley rain. Southern California, particularly the San Bernardino Valley, is expected to experience showers with periods of heavy rain, causing tricky driving conditions around mountain passes. Temperature trends remain steady, but keep an eye out for any severe weather watches or warnings as this pattern evolves over the next 48 hours.
The UV index in Los Angeles will be moderate today with a value of 6, indicating a burn time of about 23 minutes in direct sunlight. Be sure to wear sunscreen and protective clothing if you’re planning to be outdoors. On Tuesday, the sun becomes stronger with a UV index of 7, reducing the burn time to approximately 20 minutes. Remember to take appropriate precautions to protect your skin!
