A line of rain showers is sweeping through parts of Northern California, impacting cities like Redding and Reno. Southward, clouds are blanketing the skies over Fresno and Bakersfield, but precipitation is less prominent there. Clear and dry conditions extend across Southern California, including Los Angeles and San Diego. In the desert regions, Las Vegas and Phoenix remain dry while areas near Ely are encountering partly cloudy skies.
Salt Lake City this afternoon is heating up with temperatures climbing to 93 degrees by 6 PM. A steady south wind at 12 miles per hour continues through the afternoon, shifting slightly southwest by 8 PM. Mostly sunny skies will dominate, with a brief period of partly cloudy conditions early this evening.
In the Southwest today, we’re seeing a range of high temperatures across several key cities. Las Vegas is heating up to a sizzling 103 degrees, while Phoenix is even warmer at a stark 110 degrees. Over in San Diego, temperatures are much milder at 75 degrees, providing a comfortable coastal contrast. Bakersfield is forecasted to reach 94 degrees, and Flagstaff will be more moderate at 84 degrees. This pattern highlights the stark temperature differences within the region as we experience significant heat inland compared to the cooler coastal areas.
Tonight, Las Vegas will dip to 77 degrees, while Flagstaff sees a cooler low of 55. In Ely, temperatures will drop significantly to 47 degrees, marking one of the more notable declines across the Southwest. San Francisco is expected to settle at 55 degrees, with Fresno not far behind at 65.
Tomorrow in Phoenix, prepare for scorching heat with a high of 113 degrees, significantly above average. Las Vegas is not far behind, expecting to reach 106 degrees, also above typical July readings. In contrast, San Diego will have a more moderate high of 76 degrees, keeping it comfortable along the coast. Further inland, temperatures in Bakersfield and Fresno will peak at 96 degrees, highlighting the overall warm trend in the region. Meanwhile, San Francisco will be cooler at 66 degrees, well below the warmer areas to the south and east.
A strong low-pressure system is set to impact the Southwest starting tomorrow, bringing the potential for severe weather. Expect thunderstorms to develop in Arizona and New Mexico, with some storms possibly producing heavy rain and gusty winds. In the higher elevations of the Rockies, snow showers are likely, creating slick conditions for travel. As the front passes, the latter half of the day will see a drop in temperatures by about ten degrees, leading to cooler and breezy conditions. Remain alert for any severe weather warnings, as this system brings significant changes to the region’s weather.
The UV index in Salt Lake City is expected to be very high at 9 on both Sunday and Monday, with a fast burn time of just 15 minutes in direct sunlight.
