Meteorologist Amy Freeze here. Today’s weather is keeping us on our toes! From snowfalls in the Rockies to thunderstorms in the Southeast, I’m diving deep into how these conditions are playing out region by region. Stay prepared with comprehensive temperature charts and storm forecasts for the next 48 hours.
On the radar, we see a significant weather system impacting various parts of the United States today. Starting in the West, there’s rain along the Pacific Coast, particularly affecting Seattle and San Francisco with moderate showers. Snowfall is expected in the higher elevations of the Rockies, with Denver experiencing cloudy conditions and isolated snow flurries. Moving southeast, light precipitation from a storm system is developing near Dallas, with some rain extending into Houston, where heavier showers are likely. The Midwest is largely clear, although Kansas City and Minneapolis are under heavy cloud cover with potential for light rain later today. Meanwhile, a band of heavy precipitation is creating the biggest impact across the eastern United States, stretching from the Gulf Coast up to the Great Lakes. Atlanta is facing significant storms, leading to heavy rain and potential flash flooding. Strong thunderstorms are expected to move through the Carolinas, intensifying over central North Carolina throughout the day. In the Northeast, steady rain is pushing towards New York City and Washington, D.C., bringing cloudy skies with scattered showers. Tampa sees improving weather with scattered showers tapering off, while in the Great Lakes region, Chicago has light rain with clearing expected by evening.
Let’s take a look at today’s high temperatures across the country. In the Southeast, Tampa is feeling the heat, reaching a high of 88 degrees, while Orlando is close behind at 86. The Northeast sees warmer conditions with Washington, D.C. hitting 85 degrees and New York at a comfortable 79. Moving to the Midwest, Chicago is noticeably cooler at 52 degrees, contrasting with warmer temps in Indianapolis at 67. Out West, Phoenix is blazing with a high of 94 degrees, while Los Angeles remains much milder at 64. Overall, we’re seeing a clear divide between the warm South and cooler Northern regions.
Low temperatures across the U.S. are shaping up to be quite chilly tomorrow morning. Expect a brisk 31 degrees in Minneapolis, dipping below freezing. Chicago will wake up to a low of 36 degrees, while Kansas City is not far behind at 34 degrees. Heading south, Atlanta will start off at 49 degrees, and further down in Houston, the low will be a mild 63 degrees. Over in the Northwest, Seattle has a more comfortable low of 42 degrees. Expect cooler conditions in the Rockies, with Denver at 50 degrees and Salt Lake City also at 50.
High temperatures across the region tomorrow are expected to be above average, brought on by a warm front moving through. In Dallas, look for a high of 77 degrees, while Houston will enjoy a balmy 82 degrees. Further east, New Orleans is set to reach 83 degrees, demonstrating the warmth pushing through the Gulf Coast. Meanwhile, in Atlanta, temperatures will be slightly cooler with a high around 71 degrees. On the higher end, Tampa is forecasting a robust 83 degrees, making it one of the warmest spots in the Southeast. Overall, this pattern indicates a pleasant early May day for much of the area.
For the next 48 hours, the central U.S. braces for significant storm activity as a dynamic cold front moves eastward. Areas from Denver to Oklahoma City should prepare for severe thunderstorms, with potential hail and strong winds. By tomorrow evening, this system bridges across the Mississippi Valley, intensifying in Chicago with the possibility of heavy rain. In the Southeast, Atlanta may experience scattered thunderstorms, although severe impacts are less likely. Houston and Dallas can anticipate a mix of showers and isolated storms, offering some needed relief from dry conditions. Northern California and the Pacific Northwest face a different set of challenges, with persistent rain showers creating slick travel conditions. Meanwhile, the Northeast, including New York and Washington D.C., remains relatively calm, with variable cloudiness but limited precipitation.
