This week in U.S. weather brings a variety of conditions from coast to coast. Meteorologist Amy Freeze here to guide you through the current weather phenomena affecting our nation, from thunderstorms and heavy rains to unusual temperature swings. Whether you’re in the storm’s path or planning your week around the sun and clouds, here’s what you need to know to stay safe and make the most of your weather.
On the radar, a line of rain and thunderstorms is sweeping across the Central U.S. Rain is steadily falling in New York, making for a soggy day, especially impacting the Washington D.C. area with significant rainfall. In the Southeastern U.S., a strong area of thunderstorms is making its way from Atlanta toward the Carolinas. For Southern states, like Dallas and Houston, expect overcast conditions likely to persist throughout the day. There is a slight risk for strong storms in the lower Mississippi Valley later today. Seattle is experiencing clear and dry conditions. Denver is dealing with a mix of rain and wind. Across the Plains, Kansas City is seeing scattered rain showers. The Upper Midwest, including Minneapolis, has light rain, whereas heavier rain is affecting Chicago, potentially impacting evening commutes.
This afternoon, in the Southwest, Phoenix swelters with a high of 103 degrees, while Los Angeles enjoys a more moderate 74. Heading east, Dallas hits a warm 89 degrees, and Oklahoma City is not far behind at 90. In contrast, the Midwest is significantly cooler, with Minneapolis only reaching 51 degrees and Chicago at 53. Out in the Northeast, New York is experiencing unseasonably cool weather with a high of 57 degrees, while Washington, D.C., is warmer at 61. Atlanta warms up nicely to 83 degrees, creating a comfortable vibe for outdoor activities.
The Midwest will see a chilly start tomorrow, with Minneapolis at 43 degrees and Chicago at 43 as well. Heading to the southeast, Atlanta will have a low of 60 degrees while New Orleans cools down to 46. Los Angeles at 60 and San Francisco get temperatures dipping to 50 degrees. Denver will hit a low of 53 degrees.
Tomorrow, Dallas will heat up to a warm 89 degrees, while Houston is expected to reach a balmy 92. In contrast, farther up the coast, Atlanta is looking at a high of 84 degrees. Moving to the Carolinas, Charlotte is set for a high near 80 degrees, indicating a pleasant day ahead. Nashville could experience more moderate temperatures peaking at 72 degrees.
Across the Midwest, a series of weather systems are set to bring impactful conditions over the next 48 hours. The Rockies will experience showers including light snowfall, affecting mountain travel from Denver to Billings. The Pacific Northwest sees a front ushering in rain for Seattle, transitioning to snow as it moves into the higher elevations.
