National News – 05/02/2025, as reported by Meteorologist Amy Freeze: Weather conditions span from much-needed rain on the West Coast to sunny days in the East. With substantial snow in the Midwest and storms brewing in the South, understand what makes this weather so varied and fascinating. Dive deeper into today’s unique weather trends and the atmospheric dynamics at play across different U.S. regions in our detailed blog post.
Across the nation, today’s radar reveals diverse weather patterns. Starting out West, the Pacific Northwest and California remain dry, with no significant weather systems impacting these areas. Moving inland, Denver is under clear skies without precipitation. However, snow is blanketing the upper Midwest, with significant snowfall evident near Minneapolis and extending into Wisconsin, suggesting travel disruptions in these areas. Heading south, strong rain showers are impacting the region from Texas into Oklahoma, particularly around Oklahoma City and Dallas, potentially causing localized flooding. In the central U.S., a band of rain stretches from Kansas City eastward towards Chicago, bringing moderate showers to these areas. The Northeast is experiencing a substantial storm system with rain and wintry mix affecting areas from New York to New England, including Washington, D.C., where rain showers persist. The Southeast, including cities like Atlanta and Tampa, is experiencing a mix of clear to partly cloudy conditions with no precipitation expected today. The most significant impact is clearly felt in the Upper Midwest where snowfall rates continue to rise, potentially leading to hazardous conditions on the roads.
Good afternoon! Today we’re seeing some notable temperature spreads across the country. In the Southeast, Miami shines with a high of 90 degrees, making it one of the hottest spots, while Atlanta and New Orleans sit comfortably in the mid-80s. Heading north, Washington D.C. is warm as well, reaching 87 degrees, in contrast to cooler conditions in Chicago where the high struggles to hit 56. Out West, Phoenix is sweltering at 93 degrees, while San Francisco remains mild at just 60. The contrasts today highlight a significant range in weather across different regions.
Now for the low temperatures across the U.S. Tomorrow morning, expect a chilly start in the Midwest, with Minneapolis at a brisk 43 degrees and Chicago dipping to a cool 43 as well. Heading west, Denver will see temperatures drop to 47 degrees, while Salt Lake City cools to 56 degrees. The South remains relatively mild, with Dallas forecasted at 55 degrees, but Atlanta will feel a bit cooler at 55 as well. Notably, Oklahoma City will start the day at 44 degrees, hinting at the colder air settling in. In contrast, Los Angeles enjoys a balmy 55 degrees, far from any freezing concern.
High temperatures for tomorrow are expected to surge across the region, with many cities experiencing above-average readings for early May. Los Angeles will see a pleasant high of 64 degrees, while San Francisco remains cooler at 59 degrees. Further inland, Denver is predicting a warm high of 78 degrees, and Dallas should reach 76. Over in Houston, temperatures will climb to a balmy 82 degrees. In contrast, Minneapolis will be on the chilly side with just 54 degrees expected. Overall, a robust high-pressure system is contributing to these warmer conditions across the southern sectors.
A cold front is making its way across the Midwest to the East Coast over the next two days, bringing a wave of showers and potential thunderstorms. Chicago will be the first to experience this shift, with rain expected to persist through the evening. As the front progresses, look for stormy conditions reaching New York and Washington D.C. by Tuesday afternoon, coupled with gusty winds. Moving south, Atlanta and Tampa are prepping for scattered thunderstorms, with Tampa experiencing a bit more intensity that includes possible severe storms. Out west, the rain will persist in San Francisco and the surrounding areas, though Los Angeles remains largely dry. Up in the Northwest, Seattle can expect showers to linger, maintaining the chilly and damp conditions there. For the Plains, Denver stays mostly dry with mild temperatures persisting into midweek. Keep an eye on shifting weather patterns and potential weather warnings, particularly along the eastern seaboard and southeastern states.
